*The Corrections and Veteran's Affairs Policy Committees
have joined forces to meet the challenge the International has laid
out for Council 5. The members if
the committee are Tim Henderson, Mike Keapproth, David Meyer, Loretta Meinke,
and Sid Helseth. A decision was
made to "adopt a room" at the Minneapolis Veteran's Home and to
furnish it so the residents and their families and friends have a comfortable
place to go. It's a great place to
have grandpa's birthday party or sit around with friends and play Wii on a large
screen TV. *A semi-load of new clothing was
donated and members will be delivering them to every Veteran at all 5 homes in
Minnesota. Members will be
providing security and escorting residents for the Memorial Day Picnic at the
Minneapolis Home. We also need
members to help sort the clothes that were donated.
If interested, please e-mail ascore@ LL.doc.state.mn.us *There is a Jerry Clark Memorial
Scholarship offered through AFSCME International for children of AFSCME
members. The scholarship will be
awarded to two students who are correctly sophomores majoring in social
sciences. Winners will receive
$5000 per year for their junior and senior years of study, as well as an
opportunity to intern with the International Union's Political Action
Department. For an application, go
to the International's website: www.afscme.org.
Applications must be postmarked NO LATER THAN July 1, 2008 with the
winner to be announced by August 1, 2008. *A reported is needed to report
on your local union's battles, success stories and unique activities.
You would also submit short stories and photos for AFSCME's publications
and websites. If you're interested,
you will receive free training on how to take beautiful photos, learn how to
write short stories, and learn how to build a stronger public image for AFSCME
members. If interested, e-mail Tim
Henderson: Thenders@LL.doc.state.mn.us *Wes Quick, a retired
Groundskeeper at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center, is participating in
